Estrigenix CSO Karyn Frick Featured on “FemTech Focus” Podcast

MILWAUKEE (May 16, 2023) – Estrigenix Therapeutics, Inc., a Wisconsin-based, privately held pharmaceutical company leading the way in estrogen biology, was recently featured on the podcast FemTech Focus hosted by Brittany Baretto, PhD.

Karyn Frick, Ph.D, chief scientific officer of Estrigenix spoke with Dr. Baretto regarding Estrigenix’s first-in-class therapeutics to treat and prevent hot flashes and dementia in menopausal women with fewer side effects than current hormone therapy (HT).

The dramatic decline in the production of estrogen during menopause can result in hot flashes, sleep disruption, memory dysfunction, anxiety, and depression in many women.  Although traditional HRT addresses these symptoms, HT has associated risks for breast cancer and blood clots leading to stroke. For this reason, many OB/GYNs will not prescribe HT for the approximately 20% of menopausal women with a history of breast or uterine cancer or stroke.

Additionally, some women who are not in these high-risk categories avoid taking estrogen due to the perceived health risks.  Recent clinical and preclinical findings have demonstrated that the negative side effects of HTs may be due to activation of the alpha, but not beta, estrogen receptor isoform. Therefore, estrogen-based HT that selectively targets ER beta may avoid the health risks associated with ER alpha activation.a may avoid the health risks associated with ER alpha activation.

Estrigenix has developed novel highly selective ER beta agonists that, in pre-clinical testing, demonstrated that long-term ER beta activation can reduce hot flash-like symptoms and enhance spatial and object recognition memories in ovariectomized mice. These highly selective ER beta agonists have the potential to serve as a safe alternative to HT for the over sixty million menopausal women in the U.S. alone, 80 percent of whom experience symptoms including hot flashes and memory dysfunction.

“The severity and frequency of hot flashes are correlated with an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease, which may help to explain why 2/3 of Alzheimer’s patients are women,” explained Frick.  “At Estrigenix we are developing treatments which will address multiple symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, memory and potentially bone health, but which avoids the risks associated with traditional hormone therapy, such as cancer and stroke.” “We are looking at completing our preclinical testing so that we can progress to an investigational new drug application,” she continued.
